California Institute of the Arts (Cal Arts)

캘리포니아예술대학교는 1961년 월트 디즈니와 그의 형제에 의해 캘리포니아 주 발렌시아에 설립되었으며, 흔히 CalArts(칼아츠)라고 불리는 종합예술대학입니다. 실험적이고 창조적인 애니메이션 수업을 진행하는 것으로 유명하고, 여러 학부가 연계하여 프로젝트를 진행하기 때문에 한편의 애니메이션이 완성되는 과정을 직접 경험하고 실무 능력을 쌓을 수 있는 계기를 제공합니다.

그런 만큼 CalArts는 애니메이션 분야에서는 단연 미국 1위로 꼽힙니다. 디즈니사의 ‘라이온킹’, ‘알라딘’, ‘미녀와 야수’ 등 대부분의 작품에 CalArts 출신자들이 참여했을 정도로 졸업생들의 활약이 대단하며, ‘크리스마의 악몽’으로 유명한 감독 팀 버튼 또한 CalArts 출신입니다. 340명의 교수진이 재직 중이며 학생 대 교수 비율은 약 6.4:1에 불과해, 수업 당 평균 학생 수가 약 8명으로 소규모 교육을 받을 수 있다는 것이 CalArts의 장점 중 하나입니다.

CalArts에서는 Art, Critical Studies, Dance, Film/Video, Music, Theater의 6개 학부가 운영됩니다. 개설되어 있는 학부 전공에는 Creative Writing Program, Aesthetics and Politics Program, Program in Art, Program in Graphic Design, Program in Photography and Media, Program in Art and Technology, Program in Film and Video, Program in Experimental Animation, Program in Character Animation, Film Directing Program, Acting Program, Directing Program, Writing for Performance Program, Scene Design Program, Costume Design Program, Lighting Design Program, Sound Design, Technical Direction Program이 있습니다.
